Translate a book from English to Spanish

Spanish is read by hundreds of millions of people, and Amazon.com and Amazon.es each have a Spanish-language shelf. Here is how to put your book on it.

Spanish from Spain, Mexico or Latin America?

Are you aiming at Amazon.es or at Spanish-speaking readers in the United States? Vocabulary (ordenador/computadora, coche/carro), the second-person plural (vosotros in Spain, ustedes elsewhere) and everyday expressions differ. You choose the variant; it is applied throughout.

Three pitfalls specific to English into Spanish

The word “you”: English has one form, Spanish has tú and usted. The relationship between two characters decides it, and a switch from one to the other must be deliberate. Grammatical gender: a narrator who says “I was tired” must become cansado or cansada, so the style sheet records the gender of every character. Past tenses: English “was walking” and “walked” become caminaba or caminó depending on whether the action is ongoing or completed, without making the narration heavier.

Before / after

“Are you coming?” she asked, without turning around.
→ —¿Vienes? —preguntó ella, sin darse la vuelta.

How much for my novel?
